In the night of 11 August, tropical Storm Erin has wreaked havoc on Cape Verde’s São Vicente and Santo Antão islands, claiming at least ten lives and triggering a state of emergency.
Food and drinking water are becoming increasingly scarce. The island's sewage treatment plant is completely blocked, creating an acute shortage of drinking water. A ticket system for food distribution has been introduced, but it does not guarantee that everyone receives provisions.
Thanks to the amazing work from the French-Cabo Verdean association (AFCM), and their two members Joël Santos and Sébastien Pinto, Calao has co-financed the shipping of a whole container, which was finalized yesterday in front of the local press. The container holds approximately 2 tonnes of clothing (for men, women and children), 3 tonnes of food, 800 kg of cleaning products, and 1.5 tonnes of FFP2 masks donated by Roller Tech SARL. Financial and material donations will be distributed to affected families. The container is expected to arrive in about 20 days.
